ERC Project – GAP

Guidance of Axonal Pathfinding via Nano-Switches

Neurons constantly make navigation decisions: whether an axon should grow, retract or change
direction. In the developing nervous system these decisions are guided by complex chemical and
physical cues. Following injury, however, these signals disappear and axons regenerate randomly,
preventing functional reconstruction of neural circuits. The GAP project aims to address this
challenge by developing magnetic nano-switches capable of controlling neuronal
mechanotransduction and influencing axon navigation decisions.
